Hello, I’m Marcus and I made this website and bound all the books you see here.
I’m a “wannabe” electrical engineer, industrial design school dropout, corporate supply chain planner, and naive small business owner.
I started binding books because I wanted a planner that fit the way I worked. I kept binding because it turns out there is no perfect planner—even today I don’t have a format I like!
Now, I mostly make books with a focus on utility and simple design.
Ideally, they invite you in and meet you with minimal distractions.
Then they become a place for pinning memories and ideas. They free you to think about the next thing without losing the last. They give your brain space. And, because writing may not be your first instinct, I try to make them irresistible to pick up.
The bookbinding I do isn’t exceptionally technical or exotic. These books all come from my basement workshop in Portland, Oregon where I print, fold, sew, assemble, and cover them all. I prefer to work with linen or paper covers rather than leather. This is mostly a choice to be more of a binder than a leather working expert–plus I really love linen. I focus on natural materials and eliminating plastic wherever possible. Small examples of this include using paper shipping tape instead of plastic and kraft paper and cardboard instead of bubble wrap.
I’m not very good with social media, but you’re welcome to follow me on Instagram or Pinterest, where I show some of the experimental things I do, including some photography, street art, and other random creations.
